France exported wine and spirits at lower prices last year. This is due to the global crises.

The value of exports fell by 4 percent to 15.6 billion euros in 2024 compared to the previous year, which was also already weaker, according to the Federation of French Wine and Spirits Exporters (FEVS) in Paris. The export volume stabilized and fell only minimally by 0.1 percent.

Exports to the USA, the most important sales country, increased by 5 percent to 3.8 billion euros, followed by the UK with a slight decline of 0.7 percent to 1.7 billion euros. In China, export revenues shrank by 20 percent in view of the weak economic situation, while they fell by 4 percent in Japan. There were no figures for Europe.

"In addition to the volatility of the global economy, there is also strong geopolitical uncertainty, whether in China or the USA," said association president Gabriel Picard. Even if export volumes have managed to stabilize, inflation and geopolitical uncertainties have at least temporarily weakened the trend of recent years towards more premium wines.
