French police have discovered 1.3 tons of cocaine worth around 30 to 40 million euros in a lorry coming from Spain. The drugs were found hidden in wooden crates during an inspection of the truck on the highway near Bordeaux, the police announced.

France's Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau spoke of a record find, which showed that the police were able to strike at the heart of the drug networks. French investigators had worked together with the Spanish police to make the raid.

The truck had come to the attention of the investigators following a tip-off about possible drug smuggling, who noted suspicious journeys made by the truck between Spain and northern Europe, as reported by BFMTV with reference to the investigators. They see the drug find as evidence of the increasing import of large quantities of cocaine to Europe via Portugal and southern Spain.

Investigators are now talking about a "white tsunami" of cocaine flooding Europe via this smuggling route. The 36-year-old Spanish driver of the truck was arrested, according to the broadcaster's report.
