A 47-year-old German mountaineer has fallen around 100 meters to his death on the Zinalrothorn near Zermatt VS. The rescue services, who had been alerted by his uninjured companion, were only able to determine the man's death on site.

The two alpinists had left the Rothorn hut last Friday at around 4.30 am to climb the Zinalrothorn. On the descent via the south-east ridge to the "Wasserloch" at an altitude of 3,520 meters, one of the two fell into the depths for as yet unexplained reasons, as the Valais cantonal police wrote in a statement on Monday. He sustained fatal injuries.

His companion remained unharmed and immediately alerted the rescue services. The emergency services from Air Zermatt, which were called out by the Cantonal Valais Rescue Organization (KWRO), were only able to determine that the mountaineer had died. The public prosecutor's office opened an investigation.
