Black Friday, which went well in some areas, and Christmas sales were unable to compensate for the losses of previous months.

The food/nearfood sector did achieve growth of 1.3 percent, according to the "Market Monitor" published on Wednesday. However, the non-food range declined by 2.6%. Online shopping remained on trend. It achieved cumulative growth of around 3.5% at the end of December.

According to the GfK figures, confectionery and snacks performed particularly well in the food segment. Chocolate sales stood out in particular due to price increases. Non-alcoholic beverages remained almost stable, while alcoholic beverages were below the previous year's level.

The GfK Monitor is based on actual sales figures that the service provider receives from over 40 major Swiss retailers. According to the data, these retailers generate around 40 to 50 percent of total sales in the sector. Specialty retailers are not included. GfK notes that the "Market Monitor" does not claim to be representative of the market as a whole.
