Following Amazon, Google is also strengthening its alliance with OpenAI rival Anthropic with a further billion-dollar investment. In a first step, the internet giant is investing ten billion dollars, as Anthropic announced.
A further 30 billion dollars may follow if the development company behind the AI chatbot Claude achieves agreed targets. Google has been among Anthropic's financial backers for years and supplies the company with special chips for artificial intelligence.
Just at the beginning of the week, Amazon invested 5 billion dollars in Anthropic - with the prospect of 20 billion dollars more in further steps. This financial injection is another example of so-called closed-loop deals in the AI (artificial intelligence) sector, in which investments flow at least partially back to the investor in return for chips or computing power.
Anthropic - and the ChatGPT developer OpenAI - urgently need more computer capacity for their artificial intelligence software. Both companies are also on their way to the stock market.
Anthropic has been in the headlines again and again in recent months. The company risked a conflict with the US government because, despite massive pressure, it insisted that its AI models should not be used in autonomous weapons systems and for mass surveillance in the USA.
The Pentagon subsequently declared Anthropic a supply chain risk, which could severely impact the use of the company's software in government agencies. The company is appealing.
