Since the derailment of a freight train in the Gotthard Base Tunnel on August 10, 2023, SBB has been working at full speed to repair the tunnel. This work is continuing as planned, SBB announced to the media in Bern on Thursday.

The next step will be test and trial operation. During test operation, empty trains will be used to test the new facilities, in particular the track, and to check the interaction of all systems.

Damage costs 150 million francs

SBB continues to estimate the material damage caused by the train derailment in August 2023, including loss of revenue, at around CHF 150 million.
