Since the derailment of a freight train in the Gotthard Base Tunnel on August 10, 2023, SBB has been working at full speed to restore the tunnel. This is continuing as planned, SBB announced to the media in Bern on Thursday.

Test and trial operations will now follow. During test operations, empty trains will be used to test the new facilities, in particular the track, and to check the interaction of all systems.

SBB continues to estimate the material damage caused by the train derailment in August 2023, including loss of earnings, at around CHF 150 million.
