A truck caught fire in the tunnel early on Friday evening. The driver sustained undetermined injuries. The Gotthard Damage Control Service brought the fire under control. The tunnel was reopened at 11.15 p.m., as the cantonal police of Uri told the Keystone-SDA news agency on request.

The foreign truck was heading north, as Stephan Kindler, the picket officer of the Uri cantonal police, previously told Keystone-SDA. The cantonal police received the emergency call at 5.37 p.m., whereupon the emergency services were deployed.

The truck was on fire a few kilometers inside the tunnel on the Uri side. There was initially no precise information about the health of the truck driver.

The truck was a total loss. As Kindler said, recovery and accident work was underway in the evening. The tunnel infrastructure also had to be inspected for damage.

There was a tailback on the A2 highway in front of both portals, as the TCS announced on the short message service X. There was also a risk of people on the road near Erstfeld UR.
