Slightly fewer e-cars were sold in 2024 than in the previous year. 19.3 percent of cars sold had a purely electric drive, compared to 20.9 percent in 2023. The electric mobility association Swiss E-Mobility speaks of a temporary dip.

For the first time in years, growth could not be increased, the association wrote on New Year's Day based on provisional data. The development was disappointing, but had been foreseeable.

The association cited the tax on the import of electric cars introduced at the start of 2024 as the main reason for this. There was also a lack of regulatory pressure to achieve the CO2 emission targets.

According to the information provided, the situation recovered somewhat over the course of the year. The last two quarters were in line with expectations, according to Swiss E-Mobility. However, Switzerland has lost touch with the leading countries in electromobility.

However, the best-selling car in Switzerland in 2024 was once again an "electric car", the Tesla Model Y, according to the communiqué. With over 6,500 sales, even more vehicles were sold than in the previous year.

The expansion of public charging stations is also making progress. With over 20,000 public charging points soon to be installed, Switzerland is top in this area, according to association director Krispin Romang.

There are still major differences between the cantons and language regions in terms of electromobility: while 24.9 percent of cars sold in Zurich were electric cars, the proportion in Ticino was just 11.2 percent.
