First the man started a fire, then, according to police, he shot two of the arriving firefighters: in a mountainous region in the US state of Idaho, a heavily armed gunman deliberately lured the emergency services into a deadly ambush, according to initial findings by investigators. Two of the firefighters died and a third was critically injured, as the sheriff of Kootenai County, Robert Norris, told journalists late on Sunday evening (local time).

After an hours-long gun battle and the deployment of a special unit and helicopters, the suspected perpetrator was found dead in the difficult-to-access mountainous area. A high-powered rifle was lying next to him, the sheriff added. "The firefighters had no chance," he added.
The police assume that the man acted alone. The motive is completely unclear. There is no longer any danger to people in the area. However, the fire has not yet been extinguished. The body of the suspected shooter was therefore quickly removed.
According to Norris, the fire department had been alerted to a fire in a mountainous region near the town of Coeur d'Alene in the early afternoon. The area in the north-west of the USA is a popular hiking and excursion destination. When the first helpers arrived, they were shot at, the sheriff added.
In the USA, gun violence is part of everyday life. Pistols and larger caliber weapons are easily accessible and in circulation by the millions. Attacks with particularly serious consequences repeatedly spark debates about stricter gun laws.
