The world-famous carnival in Brazil's metropolis of Rio de Janeiro has officially opened. Mayor Eduardo Paes handed over the keys to the city to "King Momo", the symbolic figure of the carnival, in the city palace, heralding the start of the colorful hustle and bustle on Sugar Loaf Mountain. "Rio de Janeiro is a way of life, an atmosphere and nothing represents the spirit of this city better than the Rio Carnival. Have fun, but be responsible," said Paes.

During the street carnival, dozens of carnival groups will parade through the streets of the city's districts in the coming days. The city council approved 458 parades this season. The best samba groups show off their skills in the Sambodrome - the grandstand street built by the famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. Tens of thousands of spectators in the stands and millions watching on television in Brazil and around the world usually follow the parades.
Turnover of almost one billion euros
Rio's city council estimates that the carnival generates an economic turnover of 5.9 billion reais (around 950 million euros) - with services that are directly or indirectly linked to the celebrations. A total of eight million people are expected to visit the city.
