Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein will stand trial again in New York in April. Judge Curtis Farber ruled at a court in New York that the jury would be retried from April 14 on a charge on which it had been unable to reach an agreement in the previous trial.
The 73-year-old was convicted of rape and criminal sexual conduct in 2020 and sentenced to 23 years in prison. However, the conviction was surprisingly overturned in 2024 due to procedural errors.
The retrial then ended last summer with a split verdict and a divided jury: the jurors considered it proven that Weinstein had committed serious sexual offenses against a woman. The jury found him not guilty on another count of aggravated sexual offenses against a second woman. The jury was unable to reach an agreement on a third count relating to rape - the trial for this count is now scheduled to begin in April.
Weinstein, who is in poor health and once again appeared at the hearing in a wheelchair, has hired a new team of lawyers who have already defended former rap star Sean "Diddy" Combs and Luigi Mangione, who was charged with the murder of an insurance company boss in the middle of Manhattan, among others.
In 2023, Weinstein was sentenced to a further 16 years in prison in a separate criminal trial in California. The prosecution accused him of sexual assault there too. His defense has appealed this verdict.
