In around half of the cantons, children started school again on Monday morning after the summer vacation. In addition to the school curriculum, they can also expect a hot week with temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius. Various measures are recommended to combat the heat.
Children in the cantons of Aargau, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden (only Oberegg), Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt, Bern (German-speaking schools), Glarus, Graubünden (except for Misox), Obwalden (only Engelberg), St. Gallen, Schaffhausen, Solothurn, Schwyz and Thurgau will start the new school year on Monday.
This is according to documents from the Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education (EDK).
At the same time, temperatures of up to 31 degrees are forecast in the cities of Basel and Bern, for example, according to the weather report from the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss). On Wednesday, the thermometer in Basel is expected to show up to 36 degrees. In large parts of Switzerland, there is currently a considerable or moderate risk due to the heat.
To counteract any heat in the classrooms, the Swiss Teachers' Association (LCH) has introduced various measures. These are recommended from a room temperature of 24 degrees, as the LCH states in a health barometer.
For example, it recommends closing external blinds to provide shade. Fans could also be used for cooling. In addition, electrical appliances that are not needed should be switched off so that their waste heat does not additionally heat up the air. As far as ventilation is concerned, windows should be opened at night or early in the morning in particular.
