The power went out in several cities in Italy - presumably due to the extreme heat. In the center of the busy city of Florence, numerous stores were temporarily without electricity, as the Italian news agency Ansa reported. Cash machines and escalators were no longer working. Signs saying "cash only" were displayed in various stores. Others closed their doors completely. The power grid was also overloaded near Milan.

Bergamo, a city of 120,000 inhabitants in the north of the country, was also affected. The traffic lights stopped working in several districts there. Private homes, stores and businesses were without electricity. Several people were stuck in elevators. Temperatures have been well above 30 degrees in many places in Italy for days. Heat alerts have been issued in more than a dozen cities, including the capital Rome.

Utility company also suspects air conditioning systems to be the cause

The energy supplier Enel said it was working to restore power quickly. The outage could be "related to the heat, which led to overheating and expansion of the power cables", the company said. In addition, the operation of air conditioning systems is pushing the grid to its limits.
