According to the disaster management authority, more than 50 people have died in the country in the past 24 hours alone. The total number of fatalities since the start of the monsoon rains is almost 180, and almost 500 people have also been injured.
Several districts in Punjab have declared a state of emergency. Hospitals are on alert. Residents have also been urged to stay away from rivers, canals and power lines, according to the spokesperson for the rescue authority. According to media reports, houses collapsed due to masses of water in the provincial capital of Lahore.
Heavy rainfall is not unusual in Pakistan during the monsoon season from July to September. However, extreme weather events are on the rise. Experts blame the climate crisis for this. In the summer of 2022, Pakistan experienced a severe flood disaster that temporarily flooded a third of the country. 1,700 people lost their lives.
