Südostbahn AG (SOB) is planning extensive renovation work on the railroad line between Herisau and Wattwil. At the same time, SBB is carrying out work between Wattwil and Uznach. As a result, the line between Herisau and Uznach will be completely closed for five weeks, the SOB announced on Tuesday.

As a replacement, buses will run every half hour on the Herisau-Wattwil-Uznach route. The closure, which begins on July 6, will affect the Voralpen-Express and the S-Bahn lines S4 and S2, among others. Trains will then run according to schedule again from August 12.

The work began in March and will continue until December. Südostbahn is investing around 50 million Swiss francs in the project. Specifically, the track, walls and parts of the railroad technology in the Mühlebühl (Herisau), Bühlberg (Degersheim) and Wasserfluh (Lichtensteig) tunnels will be renovated or modernized. At Lichtensteig station, two viaducts and the pedestrian footbridge are to be repaired.
