A 39-year-old man has been on trial before the Bernese High Court since Monday. He is alleged to have strangled his 29-year-old wife in her sleep in December 2022. At first instance, he was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment.

The defendant had always denied the crime. He also lodged an appeal against the first-instance verdict.

A year ago, the Regional Court of Bern-Mittelland found "the circumstantial evidence overwhelming". The accused, a trainee paramedic, had administered a strong sedative to his wife and then strangled her.

The man, who belonged to a free church, then did everything he could to make the woman's death appear to be a suicide. He had been in an extramarital relationship at the time. The alleged suicide of his wife would have been an "elegant solution" that would not have caused him to lose face.
