Following the devastating landslides, the municipality of Glarus Süd has completed a 6.5 meter high protective dam in Schwanden GL. It is intended to protect the surrounding houses from the 60,000 cubic meters of mud that are still at risk of sliding down.

The dam runs through the entire former residential area on Herrenstrasse in Schwanden. The terraced houses in this neighborhood were completely buried and destroyed by two landslides in August 2023. They all had to be excavated and dismantled by the municipality of Glarus Süd.
The dam that has now been completed is intended to protect the remaining houses from further landslides, the municipality of Glarus Süd wrote in a press release on Tuesday. The protective structures are designed for a 100-year event.
The slope above the houses is still unstable. An estimated 60,000 cubic meters of mud could continue to slide down. In the summer of 2023, it was 30,000 cubic meters. 46 people lost their homes in the storm.
