The Swiss hotel industry set a new record in 2025. With a total of 43.9 million overnight stays, the highest figure ever recorded was achieved. This means that the industry clearly outperformed the previous year.

These are the final figures published by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Wednesday. At the end of January, the FSO had already signaled in an initial estimate that a new high had been reached.

Compared to the previous year, the result corresponds to growth of 2.6%. Compared to 2019, the last year before the pandemic, it is even an increase of 11%.

Broad-based growth

Growth was driven by both domestic and foreign guests. Around 21 million overnight stays were attributable to travelers from Switzerland (+1.4%). City breaks were particularly popular, while stays in mountain regions and rural areas declined slightly.

12.7 million overnight stays were registered from Europe (+3.9%), which corresponds to a market share of 29%. The long-distance markets accounted for a total of 23% of overnight stays.

Demand from the USA in particular increased by 5%. Although the Asian markets recovered slightly, they remained well below the 2019 level (-18%).

Switzerland Tourism anticipates a largely stagnant tourism year in 2026. According to Director Martin Nydegger, in view of the high demand, there is a greater focus on the targeted temporal and spatial management of guests as well as sustainable development.
