The year 2024 is therefore very likely to be the world's warmest year since records began, as the climate service of the EU's Copernicus Earth observation program announced on Friday.
In the past three months, "the Earth has experienced the hottest June and August, the hottest day and the hottest summer in the northern hemisphere since records began," explained the Climate Service's Deputy Director, Samantha Burgess. This "string of record temperatures" increases the likelihood that 2024 will be the warmest year on record.
In August, the average surface temperature of the Earth was 16.82 degrees Celsius. Previously, countries such as Spain, Japan, China and Australia had already set heat records in August.
