Almost three years have passed since Google integrated energy-efficient routes into its map service. These are marked with a small leaflet. However, many users still don't know what this is all about.
However, these routes can sometimes save you a lot of money. In my small example with a trip from Zurich to Rapperswil, the energy-efficient route saves me a whole 41 percent on electricity. A considerable amount, for which I am also prepared to allow a little more time.
Not as fast, but cheaper and more scenic to drive.

How to set your vehicle type
Another advantage: the suggested routes are not static. As Google Maps continuously analyzes traffic, the recommendations can change depending on the time of day and traffic conditions. This means that a route that is efficient in the morning may no longer be the best choice in the evening.
In addition to the financial benefits, the focus is also on the ecological aspect. Google itself emphasizes that it wants to use the function to reduce CO₂ emissions from road traffic.
Of course, the route option is not just for electric cars. In the settings, users can select the drive type of their vehicle, which means that Google Maps also calculates the most efficient route for petrol or diesel-powered vehicles. You can easily find the settings via the icon with the sliders next to the title "By car".
