According to initial reports, at least three people have died in the USA as a result of Hurricane Helene. The hurricane made landfall on the west coast of the US state of Florida in the evening as the second-highest category 4 hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center. The authority subsequently downgraded the hurricane to category 1 - with sustained wind speeds of up to 145 kilometers per hour.

"We have a report of one fatality," said Florida Governor Ron DeSantis at a press conference. A traffic sign had fallen over and hit a car, he added. CNN also reported on the case. According to the broadcaster, two people also died in the state of Georgia when they were caught in a tornado triggered by the hurricane.
"Helene" made landfall in the Big Bend region of northern Florida late in the evening (local time) as an "extremely dangerous hurricane" with wind speeds of up to 225 kilometers per hour. The US Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) had issued an urgent warning about the storm for several states.
