A popular initiative to lift protection for wolves has failed. The initiative, launched in May 2023, called for wolves to be allowed to be hunted all year round everywhere in Switzerland except in the Swiss National Park.

The initiative committee argued with the rapidly increasing number of wolves. Wolves are very important for the wilderness. However, due to their intelligence, adaptability and "reproductive disposition", they cause too much damage in populated areas, in cultivated landscapes and in agriculture.

In addition, there are further dangers for humans, livestock and pets. The wolf population also calls into question recreational opportunities in nature. According to Monday's edition of the Federal Gazette, 100,000 valid signatures had to be submitted by November 2 for the initiative to come into effect.

The initiative "For the protection of humans, pets and livestock from wolves" wanted a new paragraph in Article 79 of the Federal Constitution. This regulates the federal competencies for hunting and fishing. The new paragraph 79a should state that the wolf is only protected in the Swiss National Park in the Engadin and may be hunted everywhere else throughout the year.

The initiative was launched by a committee of seven private individuals. According to their website, they are owners of cows, horses, goats and sheep. According to the website, they were supported by the Zug Farmers' Association and the EDU Switzerland, among others.
