The capacity of battery storage systems for solar power in households and commercial enterprises is expected to rise sharply to almost 2.5 gigawatt hours within a year. New installations will almost double by the end of 2026

The significant growth can be seen in the "Battery Monitor" published on Friday by Swissolar, the industry association for solar energy. According to the report, the capacity of behind-the-meter storage systems, i.e. those installed on site where energy is generated, amounted to 896 gigawatt hours (GWh) in 2024. In 2025, this figure was 1451 and, according to forecasts, it will be 2461 GWh by the end of the current year.

At the same time, Swissolar is talking about a significant reduction in costs. A typical home storage system with a capacity of 15 kilowatt hours now costs around CHF 8,800 including installation. That is a quarter less than a year ago.

According to Swissolar, battery storage systems can contribute to flexibility in the generation and consumption of solar energy and to grid stability. As solar systems only produce electricity during the day, any surplus energy can be stored and used at a later time.

At the same time, according to the "Battery Monitor", large electricity storage systems are also becoming increasingly important in the grid. Various companies from the energy sector have announced the construction of over 4 GWh of additional storage capacity by 2030, wrote Swissolar.
