According to a statement from the Guardia Civil police unit, the group, which has now been dismantled, illegally stored at least 41,000 tons of plastic waste from Spain, France and Portugal in Spain, but also exported it to countries such as India, Turkey, Malaysia, Brazil, Morocco, Thailand and the United Kingdom. Five people have been arrested and 15 others are under investigation.
The waste, which is difficult to recycle and hazardous to the environment, is said to have been transported, traded and stored across borders without authorization. In Spain, it was dumped in three unauthorized landfills in the regions of León and Valencia, among others.
A total of six searches were carried out in cooperation with Europol and the authorities of the other European countries concerned. According to the Guardia Civil, most of the waste was agricultural plastics from France and Portugal.
