Around a thousand people demonstrated for the freedom and safety of queer people in Bern on Saturday. They marched through the city center as part of Christopher Street Day (CSD).
The route led from Schützenmatte to Bundesplatz, as reported by a correspondent from the Keystone-SDA news agency. "Love is a human right" could be read on one of the banners carried. Another read: "No one is free until we are all free."
The motto of this year's Christopher Street Day in Bern was "Trans Joy is Resistance". The statement was intended to call for trans, inter- and non-binary people to be visible in current discrimination debates, not just as victims, but with their joy of life and pride.
CSD commemorates June 28, 1969, when the New York police stormed a gay bar on Christopher Street. The ensuing riot is considered the birth of the modern gay and lesbian movement. CSD takes place in Zurich and Winterthur in July.
