More than a dozen countries from North, Central and South America have condemned the swearing-in of authoritarian Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro after his re-election overshadowed by allegations of fraud.
"We call on the dictatorial regime to restore democratic order and facilitate a peaceful transfer of power that respects the will of the people expressed in the elections," they said in a joint statement.
The document was signed by the delegations to the Organization of American States (OAS) from Argentina, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, USA, Jamaica, Guatemala, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and the Dominican Republic. The OAS has over 30 members in total.
Maduro was sworn in last Friday for a third term of office until 2031. There are major doubts about his re-election in July 2024 because the government illegally never presented the detailed results. For its part, the opposition presented around 80 percent of the results lists according to which its candidate Edmundo González had won the election. The USA, Canada and several Latin American countries recognize him as the winner of the election.
