In future, a deposit will be required for business travelers and tourists from twelve other countries when entering the USA - including World Cup participant Tunisia. As of April 2, the list will be expanded to 50 countries, the US State Department announced. With the deposit of 15,000 dollars (around 13,000 euros), the US government wants to prevent those entering the country from overstaying their visas and incurring costs for taxpayers.
In addition to World Cup participant Tunisia, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Grenada, Lesotho, Mauritius, Mongolia, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Papua New Guinea and the Seychelles are also new to the list. The pilot project was launched last August and applies to tourists and business travelers. According to the ministry, the number of visa holders who overstay their visa has fallen significantly since then.
The deposit is to be refunded if the travelers adhere to the requirements or do not make the trip. According to the data, it costs the American taxpayer an average of 18,000 dollars if a foreigner has to be taken out of the country. According to earlier information, visitors from countries in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) are not affected. Its 42 members include Germany as well as most EU states.
