Following the sinking of a rubber dinghy with migrants on board, only ten survivors have been rescued, according to the Italian authorities on the island of Lampedusa. At least 56 people are believed to have been on board the boat, which had set off for Europe from Sfax in Tunisia.

The search for more survivors is being made more difficult by high waves, according to Italian sources. It is assumed that many people fell into the water. The chances of survival are considered to be slim. The ten survivors were discovered on a dinghy. Rescue workers also found six bodies there, all of them men. The dinghy had left the Tunisian port on Sunday.

More than 2,200 dead or missing last year

The survivors were taken to the Italian island of Lampedusa, which has been one of the centers of migration across the Mediterranean for many years. People continue to die on the dangerous crossing from the Middle East or Africa to Europe. According to UN estimates, more than 2,200 refugees drowned or were reported missing last year. It is feared that the actual numbers are even higher.
