Food, drinking water and medicines are needed. The Federal Council explained the request on Wednesday, saying that the situation of the people in Sudan had deteriorated further following the capture of the city of Al-Fashir by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The number of starving refugees has been steadily increasing since then.
The conflict between the regular armed forces and the RSF has led to the world's worst humanitarian disaster to date. More than 12 million people have been displaced, 8 million within the country and 4 million in neighboring countries such as Chad, South Sudan and Egypt. 30 million people need help.
Since the outbreak of the war in 2023, the Swiss Confederation has provided humanitarian aid worth CHF 140 million in all countries directly affected.
