The joint presence in the same area indicates that they have formed a pair, the Office for Forests and Landscape of the Canton of Obwalden announced on Monday. The animals showed "inconspicuous behavior".

Because several wild animals had been killed, the wildlife authorities set up photo traps in the eastern Sarneraa valley. These showed that there were two wolves in the area, according to the press release.

DNA samples revealed that there was a female and a male animal from different regions. The male, officially designated M491, was found in the Urseren Valley UR last August. The female, F184, comes from a litter from 2023 in the Nanz pack VS.

According to the Obwalden Office for Forests and Landscape, it intends to monitor further developments "closely". It is in close contact with the cantonal herd protection advisory service.
