The 2023 expansion phase for the motorways could increase road safety and keep traffic out of cities: With these arguments, a civic alliance has launched the referendum campaign for November 24.

The national roads are an important piece of the puzzle in the overall transportation network, they said at a media conference in Zurich on Friday. The expansion of the network is in the interests of all road users. By preventing traffic from diverting to cities, public transport buses will not get stuck there.

The 2023 step includes six projects costing CHF 5.3 billion. These projects are necessary to eliminate bottlenecks and increase road safety. Otherwise, the number of traffic jams would explode, stated the "Yes to securing the motorways" alliance.

An alliance led by the Swiss Transport Club has launched a referendum against parliament's decision to expand the network. They speak of a "construction frenzy" that is harmful, expensive and useless.
