In response to a devastating terrorist attack in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir, India has suspended an important treaty with Pakistan on the use of rivers in the Himalayan region. The Indus Water Treaty with the neighboring country will be suspended with immediate effect, explained Vikram Misri, Secretary of State in the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. He accused Pakistan of supporting cross-border terrorism.

The Indus is Pakistan's most important river. Coming from the Chinese region of Tibet, the Indus flows through Ladakh, which officially belonged to the Indian part of Kashmir until 2019. There are important tributaries there, including the Zanskar. From there, the Indus flows on to Pakistan.
26 people were killed in the attack in the Indian part of Kashmir on Tuesday. Indian media reported that a terrorist group with possible links to Pakistan had claimed responsibility for the attack. The government in Islamabad has rejected any involvement. Kashmir has been at the center of a conflict between the two nuclear powers, each of which controls part of the region, for decades. Both claim the entire area for themselves.
