"The horrific act of violence in Örebro raises several key questions about gun legislation," it said. According to the statement, access to certain semi-automatic weapons should be restricted and the rules for checking gun owners should be revised.
On Tuesday, eleven people were killed by gunshots at an adult education facility in Örebro, Sweden, including the suspected perpetrator. Six people were taken to hospital, some with life-threatening injuries. According to police, the suspected shooter had four weapons and the corresponding licenses. Three of the weapons were found at the scene of the crime.
The government statement said that weapons such as the AR-15 assault rifle could cause a great deal of damage in a short space of time. Civilians should therefore only be allowed to own them in exceptional cases. In addition, according to the proposal, the Weapons Act should in future clearly state what exactly should be checked when applying for a weapon ownership permit. In its communication, the government proposes factors such as age, possible violations of the law and "certain medical circumstances".
According to the investigators, the suspected shooter of the crime in Örebro was not previously known to the police. They assume that the perpetrator acted alone and that it was not an act of terrorism. The motive for the crime is still unclear.
