Police in the South Caucasus republic of Georgia have used force to suppress protests against the results of the disputed parliamentary elections. A protest camp in the capital Tbilisi was broken up.

Local media reported arrests and injuries. Numerous videos of clashes between police and demonstrators are circulating on social media. The protests in the city center continued on Tuesday morning.

Supporters of the pro-Western opposition have been demonstrating against the official election results in a tent camp in Tbilisi since Sunday. In the parliamentary elections on October 26, which were overshadowed by allegations of fraud, the electoral commission declared a victory for the ruling Georgian Dream party. Last Saturday, the election commission announced the official final result and confirmed the party as the winner.

Georgian and international observers had noted numerous violations in the election. The pro-Western opposition, which had formed several electoral alliances, called for protests after the election. They and the pro-European President Salome Zurabishvili do not recognize the election results. They are calling for an international investigation and a re-run of the election. People are demonstrating against the official election results almost every day, especially in Tbilisi.
