Since the fall of the ruler Bashar al-Assad in Syria around three weeks ago, around 35,000 Syrian refugees have returned to their home country from Turkey, according to official figures. This means that more Syrians have left the country since the beginning of December than in any other three months, said Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya on NTV.

In a global comparison, Turkey has taken in the most refugees from the civil war country of Syria. According to Yerlikaya, there are currently around 2.9 million Syrian refugees living in the country. Almost a third of these are children born in Turkey. They do not receive Turkish citizenship, but have temporary protection status like their parents.
Syrians face a strong anti-refugee sentiment in Turkey. The government and opposition want the majority of them to leave the country.
