A freighter carrying around 1,200 tons of aid for the Gaza Strip has left the Cypriot port of Limassol.
The urgently needed goods are initially to be taken to the Israeli port of Ashdod, according to the Cypriot Foreign Ministry. From there, it is planned to forward them to the Gaza Strip, where the international aid organization World Central Kitchen (WCK) will take over distribution.
Focus on child nutrition
According to information from Nicosia, the aid delivery mainly comprises food for children and infants. Flour, pasta, baby food and canned food are among the items on board. Of the total of 1,200 tons, 700 came from donations from the Republic of Cyprus, while a further 500 tons were contributed by the Maltese government and several international aid organizations - including organizations from the USA, Italy and Kuwait.
Cyprus as a humanitarian hub
Since the beginning of the Gaza war, Cyprus has positioned itself as a logistical hub for humanitarian operations in Gaza. The island is the EU country closest to the crisis areas in the Middle East and sees itself as a permanent mediator in the region.
