According to the army, the target of the night attack was a terrorist from the pro-Iranian militia. He had supported members of the allied terrorist organization Hamas in planning an imminent attack against Israeli civilians. The man posed a direct threat and was "eliminated", it said.
It was the second airstrike in the suburbs of Beirut known as Dahija since the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah came into force in November. The area is a stronghold of the militia. According to unconfirmed Arab reports, a residential building was hit. There were initially no reports of possible casualties. Just a few days ago, the Israeli air force reportedly attacked a militia drone camp in Dahija. Shortly before this, the Israeli army had reported rocket fire from Lebanon.
According to a statement from his office, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared at the time that his country would vigorously enforce the ceasefire. "We will attack everywhere in Lebanon if the state of Israel is threatened," he said. Iran-backed Hezbollah had been firing rockets at Israel for more than a year since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip in October 2023. According to its own statements, it wanted to support Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Israel responded with airstrikes and a ground offensive.
