The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan, among others, met with US special envoy Steve Witkoff in Qatar, as reported by the state agency QNA. At the meeting with Witkoff on Wednesday, they agreed to continue discussing how the plan can serve as a basis for the reconstruction of the largely destroyed area.
The Arab countries adopted the plan last week at a summit meeting in Cairo. The approximately 90-page document envisages the removal of rubble and the gradual construction of living space in Gaza for the Palestinians living there over a period of around five years. The costs are estimated at the equivalent of around 50 billion euros. However, many issues - such as financing and future control of Gaza - remain unresolved and the plan's chances of success are completely open.
The plan drawn up by Egypt follows suggestions made by US President Donald Trump in February that the 1.9 million Palestinians in Gaza should be permanently relocated to other countries. During a press briefing in Washington on Wednesday, however, Trump said that no Palestinians should be forcibly displaced.
