The Arab League has criticized Iran's attacks in the Middle East as "illegal and unprovoked". These "cowardly" attacks are strongly condemned, according to a statement by the member states following their virtual meeting at foreign minister level. Iran is "deliberately and illegally" attacking civilian targets, including airports and seaports, energy facilities, residential areas and diplomatic missions. They also rejected "provocative" actions by Tehran aimed at blocking the Strait of Hormuz or disrupting international shipping.
The Arab League comprises 22 members, who often make unified statements on international conflicts, but rarely decide on concrete steps - as was the case this time. The main reasons for this are internal divisions and the fact that the League's decisions are generally not binding. Even in major wars and conflicts such as in Iraq, Syria, Libya and Yemen, the League has been accused of exerting little influence and failing to find a common line.
