Argentina's former president Cristina Kirchner has been banned from entering the USA. Foreign Minister Marco Rubio said that Kirchner and former Planning Minister Julio De Vido were guilty of corruption during their time in office. This means that they and their family members are no longer allowed to enter the USA, Rubio said. Kirchner and De Vido had embezzled millions of dollars through bribery in connection with public construction contracts.
Kirchner is both popular and controversial in Argentina. Argentina's current president Javier Milei, a fan of US President Donald Trump, had already strongly criticized Kirchner's camp during the election campaign.
Last year, an Argentinian court confirmed a six-year prison sentence and a lifetime ban from public office against the former president. She was convicted in the first instance in 2022 for embezzling public funds. However, the verdict is not yet final.
The former head of state (2007-2015) and her now deceased husband, ex-President Néstor Kirchner, who was in office from 2003 to 2007, are alleged to have awarded public contracts to a contractor friend of theirs during their terms of office without tendering, thus depriving the state of around one billion US dollars. She had denied the allegations and accused the judiciary of investigating her for political reasons.
