During a visit by US Vice President JD Vance to Yerevan, Armenia and the USA agreed to cooperate in the field of nuclear energy worth billions. This means that the USA is entering a domain of Russia, which has so far supplied the technology for the only nuclear power plant in the South Caucasus republic.

The agreement allows US technology exports worth five billion US dollars (4.2 billion euros) as well as contracts for nuclear fuel and maintenance worth four billion US dollars. Vance said this after a meeting with the Armenian head of government Nikol Pashinyan. "That means small modular reactors," he said. The USA had enough trust in Armenia to supply it with this new technology.

Peace agreement under Trump's eyes

Last year, the former Soviet republics of Azerbaijan and Armenia, which had been enemies for decades, made peace under the watchful eye of US President Donald Trump. Trump's leadership is banking on an economic upturn in the geopolitically important region, which also includes Iran and Turkey.

As military aid, the USA will deliver V-Bat reconnaissance drones to Armenia, said Vance. He is also due to visit Azerbaijan on his trip.
