The Hamas leader was killed together with the commander of the Rafah Brigade, Mohammed Sabaneh, in an attack on May 13. They had been hiding in an underground command and control center of the Islamist Hamas.
Various items belonging to the two men were found in the tunnel, the army statement said without further details. "The bodies of other terrorists were discovered during the operation and their identities are currently being investigated."
Tunnel in the immediate vicinity of the clinic
The army showed the underground tunnel to several journalists today, including a photo reporter from the German Press Agency. The latter described the tunnel as being very deep underground in the immediate vicinity of the clinic. There were many blankets on the floor in one room, which had apparently been used as a bedroom. There was a strong smell of decay in the air and there were worms everywhere on the floor. There was no technical equipment or anything similar to be seen.
Israel has repeatedly accused Hamas of misusing medical facilities for military purposes. Hamas has always denied this.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also recently said in parliament that Mohammed al-Sinwar was dead. Hamas has not yet confirmed this.
He was the brother of the former Hamas leader Jihia al-Sinwar, who was also killed. After the Israeli military killed Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif last year, al-Sinwar became the new head of Hamas' armed wing, the so-called Qassam Brigades.
