Three days after a deadly rocket attack on the Golan Heights, Israel has carried out a "targeted attack" on a commander of the Shia militia Hezbollah in the Lebanese capital Beirut. This was reported by the Israeli army. An explosion had previously been heard in the south of Beirut.

The commander was responsible for the deaths of the children and young people hit in the rocket attack on the Druze village of Majdal Shams, as well as other Israeli civilians, the report continued.

Israel's Defense Minister Joav Galant reacted on the online platform X and wrote: "Hezbollah has crossed a red line." According to rescue workers, a civilian had already been killed in a rocket attack on northern Israel in the afternoon. Previously, there had been rocket alarms in villages on the border with Lebanon.

The Lebanese news agency NNA reported an "enemy attack" in the Beirut suburb of Haret Hreik. The Hezbollah-affiliated television station Al-Manar showed images of chaotic scenes. At least four buildings were damaged in the attack.

As seen on TV, people on the street shouted: "God bless Nasrallah." Others shouted: "Netanyahu will pay the price." Eyewitnesses reported that the attack targeted an eight-storey building. According to them, the top floor was hit.

After at least twelve people were killed in a rocket attack in the Druze village of Majdal Shams on the Golan Heights annexed by Israel on Saturday, the Israeli government announced a retaliatory strike. It holds Hezbollah responsible for the attack. The Shiite militia rejected the blame. It had nothing to do with the attack, it declared several times.

Since the beginning of the Gaza war, there have been repeated confrontations between Israel's army and militant groups such as Hezbollah in the Israeli-Lebanese border region. According to its own statements, the Shiite militia is acting in solidarity with Hamas: it does not want to stop its attacks until a ceasefire is also reached in Gaza. Numerous civilians were killed in both Israel and Lebanon. Tens of thousands of residents left their homes on both sides of the border. It is the most serious escalation since the second Lebanon war in 2006.
