According to media reports, Israel's far-right police minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has issued a severe threat to the leadership of the Palestinian Authority (PA) ahead of UN Security Council consultations on the Middle East. According to the news website "ynet" and the newspaper "Times of Israel", he demanded that Israel should arrest Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and kill high-ranking PA representatives if the United Nations pushes ahead with plans to establish a Palestinian state. According to "ynet", he addressed his demand to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The UN Security Council is discussing the situation in the Middle East today. It is also expected to discuss a resolution by the US government to back up the plan to end the war in Gaza. The resolution states that as soon as the PA, which rules the West Bank, has conscientiously implemented a reform program, the conditions for "a credible path to Palestinian self-determination and statehood" could be in place.
Wording in the US resolution causes anger in Israel
The wording is causing anger in Israel, although the US peace plan presented by the USA at the beginning of October, which Israel agreed to, contains a similar passage. According to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, the wording was added to the UN resolution after negotiations in order to secure the agreement of the Arab states, for example. Egypt, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, among others, publicly backed the resolution.
Ben-Gvir accuses the Abbas-led PA of promoting and financing terrorism. Compared to the Islamist Hamas, however, Abbas and the Fatah movement, which he also leads, are considered to be much more moderate.
Abbas wants to be part of the future government in the Gaza Strip. Israel is vehemently opposed to this. The Israeli government also rejects a two-state solution on the grounds that a Palestinian state would endanger Israel's existence.
