Following a large demonstration in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul against the arrest of Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, 42 people have been arrested. They were accused of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and resisting security forces, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced on X.

On Tuesday evening, tens of thousands of people demonstrated in front of Istanbul City Hall against the arrest and dismissal of Imamoglu 100 days ago. According to media reports, there were clashes with the police on the fringes of the rally, who used tear gas against demonstrators.
Imamoglu is a popular politician from the largest opposition party CHP and is considered a promising challenger to Erdogan in future elections. He was arrested and deposed on March 23. Numerous other people close to him and his party were taken into custody in several waves of arrests. His party has nevertheless nominated him as its presidential candidate. The next regular elections are due to take place in 2028.
