At least 54 people have been killed in a shelling of a busy market in Omdurman, Sudan, by the RSF militia. According to the Sudanese Ministry of Health, 158 people were also injured in the attack in the greater Khartoum area on Saturday. Other reports spoke of an even higher number of victims.
A spokesman for the aid organization "Doctors Without Borders" (MSF) reported on Sunday in Nairobi that MSF Secretary General Chris Lockyear was in the Al Nao Hospital supported by the organization at the time of the attack. He described scenes of "absolute carnage": "The morgue is full of dead bodies. There are dozens of injured people with devastating injuries. There are injured people everywhere in the emergency room, while the medical team is doing what it can."
More than twelve million people displaced
In the power struggle in Sudan, which has been ongoing since April 2023, de facto ruler Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan is fighting against his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo and his militia RSF. According to UN figures, more than twelve million people have been displaced by the conflict or have fled to neighboring countries.
Most recently, the army has made significant territorial gains in strategically important areas and also in the greater Khartoum region. In the west of Omdurman, however, there are still areas controlled by the RSF.
