At least seven people have died after a boat carrying migrants capsized off the northwest coast of Malaysia. 13 people were rescued, the Bernama news agency reported, citing the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). The accident occurred near the border with neighboring Thailand. The boat capsized on Saturday and it is estimated that around 100 people were on board.

It is feared that the number of victims could rise significantly. The search for possible victims is to continue this Monday.

According to the authorities, the people are refugees from Myanmar. The military took power there in 2021. Critics of the regime have been brutally persecuted ever since. Members of the Rohingya Muslim minority have already been brutally driven from their homes in predominantly Buddhist Myanmar. Every year, hundreds of them risk their lives by sea and seek refuge in Malaysia or Indonesia.
