The EU states have imposed sanctions against one of the main perpetrators of atrocities in Sudan. This is the deputy commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, who is also the leader's brother. "This sends a signal that the international community will hold those who are responsible to account," said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas in Brussels after a meeting of the foreign ministers of the member states.

The reasons for the inclusion in the sanctions list stated that Abdelrahim Hamdan Dagalo had ordered killings and executions of civilians and had led the RSF's actions against civilians in Al-Fashir. The RSF has recently carried out murder, torture, rape and executions against people in the city. Al-Fashir has been under its control since the end of October. The militia has been fighting against government troops for two and a half years.
The EU sanctions for actions that undermine the stability of Sudan basically provide for the freezing of all funds and economic resources of the person concerned.
UN on war in Sudan: biggest humanitarian crisis in the world
According to Kallas, all 27 EU member states called on the parties to resume negotiations on a ceasefire. Most recently, US President Donald Trump announced on his Truth Social platform that he wanted to end the war in Sudan at the request of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The United Nations describes the war in Sudan as the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world. Around twelve million people have fled or been displaced by the fighting between the government army SAF and the militia RSF.
