Baume-Schneider met with WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in Geneva on Friday, as reported by the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA) on Saturday. Topics of discussion included the WHO's strained budget situation and the organization's reform processes.
The budget situation was further exacerbated by the announced withdrawal of the USA, it was said. Baume-Schneider pointed out at the meeting that a clear focus on the WHO's core mandate is all the more important in times of tight funding capacities.
Switzerland is in dialogue with other member states, donors and the WHO secretariat to prevent the discontinuation of life-saving programs. These include, for example, the fight against communicable diseases such as HIV/Aids, tuberculosis, malaria and polio.
The WHO is supported by its 194 member states and has worldwide expertise and the institutional multilateral framework to promote global health protection. Switzerland is one of the founding members of the organization.
